SUNDAY FROM MY DESK
Next door to the Museum of Modern Art in NYC, there is a surprising new project by UNIQLO called SRPZ NY (Surprise New York). It is collaboration with MOMA, and was created to help the public understand, access, and enjoy the art of our time. T-shirts, bags and more – wonderful items from contemporary Pop artists for sale at a reasonable price. An entire area dedicated to the concept of creating a place where “clothes and art meet”. Clearly an idea that inspires me!
While some couture designers have recently used artists’ work to good effect, this is really the first time where the use of art in clothing becomes accessible, affordable, and a joy to own. Andy Warhol would have especially loved seeing this, with his commitment to art for the general public. Here, a drawing by Kris Ruhs – new art for our shopping bags and T shirts. Art should be everywhere you look.
A Keith Haring T shirt, from an original untitled drawing.
Here, another T-shirt, long sleeved, from a Keith Haring woodcut from 1989.
A woman’s dress sweatshirt from a work of Andy Warhol, 1983, “Moon Explorer”.
From a Jean-Michel Basquiat 1983 acrylic and oil stick on canvas drawing,
a beautiful woman’s dress sweatshirt!
From original works of Yayoi Kusama come the words: “Love Forever”; ”I like myself”;
“I adore myself”, and “Dot’s obsession”.
American slang for a face is “mug”. And coffee and tea also comes in mugs,
so American artist Kris Ruhs has designed 12 “mugs” and put them all in a box.
These mugs will make new friends of love and peace sharing their
tea and coffee in the coming year.
The first prototype made it to my desk on this quiet memorable Sunday.
