The Theatre of Apparitions by Roger Ballen
published by Thames and Hudson
available at Fondazione Sozzani Bookshop.

Separated into seven chapters or “acts” the book
is a treat of Ballenesque images taking readers on a deep journey into their subconscious.
Inspired by the sight of hand-drawn carvings on blacked-out windows in an abandoned women’s prison,
Roger Ballen started to experiment using different spray paints on glass
and then ‘drawing on’ or removing the paint with a sharp object to let natural light through.
The results are like prehistoric cave-paintings:
the black, dimensionless spaces on the glass are canvases onto which Ballen carves his thoughts and emotions.
Fossil-like facial forms and dismembered body parts coexist uncomfortably
with vaporous, ghost-like shadows. Earthly and otherworldly, physical and spiritual,
his work transcends all traditional concepts of photography.

Virgil Abloh‘s new book,
Figures of Speech published by Prestel Publishing
now at Fondazione Sozzani Bookstore.

The work essentially combines three books into one,
all exploring Abloh’s creative output and it was produced in close collaboration with Virgil himself.
The catalogue section finds Michael Darling delving into the designer’s interdisciplinary practice,
while this portion also includes essays and interviews with influential figures in art,
fashion, design, and architecture, including Taiye Selasi, Lou Stoppard, Michael Rock,
Samir Bantal, Rem Koolhaas, and Anja Aronowsky Cronberg.
Furthermore, the archives section houses over 1,800 previously-unseen images
from Virgil’s personal files, and the index then details Abloh’s projects and process,
with a vocabulary of themes developed by the designer.

“If you’ve seen it all, close your eyes”
presents extracts from the handwritten notebooks
of London-based artist and photographer Coco Capitán
now at Fondazione Sozzani Bookshop.

She  has always scribbled down her thoughts
– everywhere, all the time – often on scraps of paper
that have filled notebook after notebook.
From her first day in London in 2010 until now,
and as she travels the world on photography assignments,
Coco Capitán’s writings grant an insight into her free and instinctive creative process.
Playful aphorisms and short poems address an array of issues
with hints of humour and irony.
She combines the serious with the mundane
as she shares in her first text-based book
social, metaphorical or sentimental moments with her witty tone and distinctive hand.

The “Incidents”
is a book series based on uncommon events at the
Harvard University Graduate Schoool of Design from 1936 to tomorrow.
This cross-pollination between art and fashion, in the dialogue bewteen
fashion designer Raf Simons and Artist Sterling Ruby,
comes here to a perfect, clean, book, with fluo stripes, that is a story of an exchange, beyond collaboration.
As Raf and Ruby say, we all need to (and want to) go to Chandigarth,
the visionary body of work that is the Indian city designed in the 1950s by that Le Curbusier.

and the apotheosis of the woman.

The issue comes with “YUNG PALM,”
